Twelve Tips to Enhance Your Executive Messages

#9 Due Diligence

As a respected executive, you’ve earned credibility through proven performance and reliability. Your audiences expect you to be correct when you include facts, figures, quotes and other information in your messages. The last thing you want is to undermine that credibility by citing erroneous content in your communications. Always have your facts checked – twice. When the citations are controversial or sensitive, seek multiple sources, if possible, and be prepared to share them when challenged. This can be especially important when addressing your board, shareholders, regulators, the press or the public. But don’t underestimate any audience. Your facts may be questioned and checked at any time by anyone. Confirming your information in advance will avoid embarrassing misstatements and enhance the credibility it has taken a career to develop.
