#3 Know Your Audience

Have you ever attended a presentation or meeting where the audience stared blankly at the speaker with glazed-over eyes, silently begging for relief? It could have been an overly technical lecture to salespeople or an in-depth financial analysis to an engineering group. Or maybe it was a lofty pontification of corporate purpose and philosophy to the production crew. In every such case, it is certain that the desired message is not hitting home. When you deliver executive messages, you can’t afford to have them fall on deaf ears, so make sure you use the right tone, an appropriate level of language and a presentation style that connects. Humor, emotion and targeted content are all powerful tools, as are visual aids and interactive elements. Most importantly, understand your audience and design your message accordingly.
